John Matthias

John Matthias is a musician, composer and physicist. He has released three albums, Stories from the Watercooler on the Ninja Tune/ Counter label (2008), Cortical Songs (with Nick Ryan), a work for string orchestra and solo violin which includes remixes by Thom Yorke, Simon Tong, David Prior and many others, on the Nonclassical record label (2008) and Smalltown, Shining on the Accidental label (2001). He has worked with many recording artists including Radiohead (The Bends), Matthew Herbert and Coldcut and has performed extensively in Europe including at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and at the Union Chapel in London.

His first studio album, Smalltown, Shining was heralded by Time Out (London) as one of the first examples of a new genre of song-writing. Stories from the Watercooler and Cortical Songs have also gained much international critical acclaim, and he is due to tour the two albums in the US in Spring 2009. He has also contributed as a violinist to the sounds of many albums, television programs and two feature films.

He is the deputy director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research at the University of Plymouth, UK and is currently developing new instruments and compositional processes relating to Spiking Neurons and Sonic Events. These initiatives include orchestral composition and the development of a new Neural Music Technology.
